Food Plymouth

What we do

Among the first cities in the UK to achieve a Bronze award in 2015, Plymouth achieved Silver Award status in November 2023.

In common with our fellow Sustainable Food Places, we deliver positive impacts in the three domains of sustainable development, namely social, environmental and economic, through addressing the six key issues of the SFP framework.

Current and ongoing areas of focus include:

• Facilitation of Plymouth Food Aid Network and development of a three-pronged approach to food security across the city, including transitioning from Food Aid to a Food Access Alliance and Network model, developing a colletive bulk-buying and distribution organisation and supporting the creation of food co-operatives and social supermarkets at a neighbourhood level
• Participation in the Race, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion pilot with Sustainable Food Places
• The development and launch of a new Best Food Forward awards scheme for Plymouth caterers of all kinds
• Building a Good Food Economy in Plymouth through initiatives including the Food Plymouth Community of Dragons events and more

Former projects include:

• Generation Covid, a project funded by Unicef and Food Power which will provide 120 Plymouth families with healthy and nutritious food packs in December and February

• Sustenance Partnership, a Research & Development project funded by Innovate UK aiming to develop and try out new ideas to strengthen the local food economy in and around Plymouth – connecting producers, distributors and anyone who eats – for the good of all

• Supporting the Jabulani international food court initiative

And sustaining our long-standing collaborations, including:

• Generous Earth, a community composting pilot project which has partial funding through the Green Minds scheme and ran a successful crowdfunding campaign for new equipment in March 2024
• Facilitating Plymouth’s Fairtrade movement, with Fairtrade City status renewed in August 2023

• Plymouth Food Equality project

• Thrive Plymouth

• Co-operative Councils Innovation Network

• All Ways Apples festival and fringe

• Growing Community Abundance

We also support a wide range of initiatives led by our partner organisations across the city and beyond.
